Magic no longer exists as it once used to one the surface of Earth. Elves, humans, and other mythical creatures all lived in harmony, until science began taking the place of magic.
The elves retreated from the surface and now discourage anything human related, because it was the humans who forced them to leave. This is a problem for Fern, the princess of the first of three kingdoms that sprung up after the relocation, Hikari no Oukoku (The Kingdom of Light). She is half human.
As she approaches her hundredth birthday, her mother sends her to the surface to learn more about her human father's world in the company of four loyal knights. But something else, much more important, will occur on her birthday. She will gain the power to bring magic back to the surface, and Yami no Oukoku (The Kingdom of Darkness) will do anything to posess it. Will Fern be safe in the human world? Or will it be more threatening than they could have known?

Fern
Fern is the princess of The Kingdom of Light, and the first known human/elf mix of royal blood. She's smart, caring, and sometimes has a rather sharp temper. She is quite attracted to one of her knights, though he seems not to return her feelings. She has the ability to bring magic back to the surface, after her 100th birthday, and is therefore watched very carefully by the king of The Kingdom of Darkness.

Cedar
One of the knights who protects Fern when she is outside the castle walls and also accompanies her on their trip to the surface. He has the ability to mentally communicate with animals, and as a hobby, breeds dragon/griffin hybrids. He also can control which characteristics of each parent appear in the offspring.

Conifer
Also one of the knights that protects Fern. He is more the comic relief than anything, and is the one closest to Fern. Conifer has the most control over water of the group, though he has other more basic talents as well. He almost acts like a big brother, but the intensity of his feelings is not quite clear.

Cypress
One of the knights that accompanies Fern to the surface. Very solitary by nature, he doesn't seem to get along with many
people. He was recruited by the queen herself for this assignment as a sort of punishment, but no one knows exactly what
for. Even though he is the newest member of the group of knights, he seems to be the one who takes charge easily, and also
is the most serious of the group. His background is very mysterious, but people innately trust him.

Mahogany
Another of the knights that protect Fern on her outings from the castle, and also accompanies her on their trip to the surface. He has the ability to control all characteristics of wood, such as shape, hardness, size.

Ebony
The King of Yami no Oukoku, who wants very much to bring magic back to the surface. He hates humans, and even more elf/human hybirds. He wishes to bring on the humans what was done to the elves hundreds of years ago when they were driven off the surface. Therefore, even though Fern is a mix, he wishes to possess her to reach his ultimate goal.

Magnolia
The queen of Hikari no Oukoku, and Fern's mother. She wishes to protect Fern and her kingdom, as Fern will soon come of age and gain a vast amount of power. For this reason she sends her to the surface to be educated as well as protected from Ebony's cruel intentions.
