Lesson 2: "Getting Your Images Ready for Color"

A lead holder with non-photo blue lead (top) and a non-photo blue pencil (bottom).

The secret to clean lines: "non-photo blue" pencils.

Non-photo blue pencils are used throughout the comic industry for drawing framework, rough sketches, and layouts. These particular pencils have a unique blue color that is easily visible to the human eye, but cannot be detected by a photocopier. Non-photo blue pencils can also be used when transferring an image to the computer via a scanner, as you can easily remove this shade of blue from your scanned image by using an application such as Adobe Photoshop.

In this lesson we'll be covering the methods of taking advantage of these tools to prepare your lineart for coloring by either computer or traditional mediums.
