Katie Bair (There is no "L" in my last name!)

When did you start drawing?
I've been drawing for pretty much my entire life, and I've always loved to entertain people. My parents have movies of me when I was three or four singing "Santa Claus is Coming to Town", where I am apparently laboring under the the "louder is better" school of vocalization, and just about eating the microphone in the process. I was also enrolled in dance classes when I was seven, and learned the basics of ballet and tap, but didn't pursue it. (Mostly because the school wasn't very comprehensive, and pretty much a day-care facility for busy moms.) ...Hmm, I got kinda off-topic there. Anyhow, I've been drawing for a very long time. I actually still have my first illustrated story, which I drew at age 5.

Where did you go to art school?
I never went to art school, I'm self-taught. My parents basically told me that they didn't want to pay to send me to art college because "artists don't make any money". (So true...) My dad has since said that the reason was because he "doesn't believe in school", (...er, did I mention my mom is a school teacher?) but I distinctly recall the phrase "Starving Artist" being used several times in that conversation so many years ago. Regardless, I wanted to draw so much, that I spent a large portion of my young life teaching myself. Pretty much all of my spare time, and some of my work-time, was spent drawing. I also taught myself how to use Photoshop, then Illustrator, then Flash, and am now certified in all three. ^_^

How old are you?
People always assume I'm a lot younger than I am when they see me. (Like ten years younger!) I guess this is ok though, as I get along better with people younger than me than with my own generation. I'm a firm believer that age does not create good character or mental maturity. I've met plenty of people older than me who have re-established this time and again.

How come there's no pictures of you up here?
Because I've been stalked before; three times. As a result, I'm a little apprehensive about putting my picture online. No false modesty here, I'm a good lookin' girl, but that doesn't mean I want strangers to worship me like an idol. I'm trying to work on being more comfortable in public, because I know I can't live in fear forever, and I'll eventually start posting more pictures in the cosplay sections. I realize that people still take my picture at conventions and such, and might post them on their site, and I've got no problem with that, I'm just not gonna put a whole bunch here. (If you wanna know what I look like, then come say hi to me at a con!)

Who were your greatest artistic influences?
Adam Warren and Rumiko Takahashi. Adam because, I feel, he's probably the greatest American Manga artist around, and has really helped non-Japanese manga artists establish themselves as not being "fakes". And Takahashi-san, because I love the way she tells a story, and it's so easy to become attached to her characters!

Are you an egomaniac?
Uh, I don't think so. I am a legomaniac, does that count? o_0'

Is the character "Karaoke Kate" based off of you?
No, not really. I got the nickname of "Karaoke Kate" because I love to sing, and because I have an uncanny memory for song lyrics. The character of "Karaoke Kate" was a doodle I would put in the margins of letters, usually with her singing in some themed costume. She developed a personality of her own over the years, resulting in the intergalactic busy-body she is today. If any of the characters in my stories are based on me, it would be Yoshiko and Yashako. That's much more representative of my mood swings and behavior. -_^

Where did you learn to style wigs
Nowhere, I taught myself though a mix of logic and creativity. All those years of playing with Legos really paid off!

Seriously though, learning to style wigs is pretty easy, you just need to experiment and not be afraid to mess up every once in a while. ^_^

I sent you a billion emails and you haven't responded. What's up with that?
I'm sorry, but if you haven't heard back from me, there's a really good chance my spam filter ate your email. I get about 3,500 pieces of spam a day, so it's very hard for me to make sure that every valid email makes it through the filter safely. However, if you use the link to the contact form at the bottom of the page, I'll definitely get your message. ^_^
